The NBA All-Star Game 2014 roster was officially announced on Jan. 23, 2014, with fan favorites getting voted into the starting lineups for the Eastern and Western Conferences. Among the players selected included popular superstars such as LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Blake Griffin, as well as first-time All-Star starter, Stephen Curry from the Golden State Warriors.
The NBA.com site reported on Jan. 23 with an official release regarding which players made the list. For the starters in the Eastern Conference, Miami Heat star LeBron James is joined by his teammate Dwyae Wade, Paul George of the Indiana Pacers, Carmelo Anthony of the New York Knicks and Kyrie Irving of the Cleveland Cavaliers. In the West, Kobe Bryant made the list and is joined by first-time representative Stephen Curry from the Warriors. Also on the West's starting lineup are Thunder forward and NBA leading scorer Kevin Durant, Minnesota Timberwolves superstar Kevin Love and L.A. Clippers phenom Blake Griffin (fourth appearance). Love is also making his first-ever start in the game, although he has appeared in two previous editions of the contest.
The voting stat reports indicate that LeBron James led all vote-getters with 1,416,419 votes, while Kevin Durant was second with 1,396,294 votes. Paul George of the Pacers had 1,211,318 votes, while Stephen Curry had 1,047,281 votes. Also of note, the Eastern Conference head coach is already known, as Indiana's Frank Vogel will get the nod due to the team's record and the fact that Heat coach Erik Spoelstra was head coach in the game last year. The West coach has yet to be named, and it should be noted that Spurs' head coach Gregg Popovich is ineligible, since he was head coach in the 2013 game.
As noted, this marks Stephen Curry's first-ever All-Star Game appearance since arriving in the league several years ago and quickly becoming one of it's top scorers and shooters. Curry may have benefited from a few tough injuries to other players which took them out of the running. It's also highly possible that the star guard's performance in last year's playoffs and through the season so far have inspired voters who believe his skills deserve to be on display. Curry is currently averaging 23.5 points per game and 9.2 assists per game, which is second to only Chris Paul of the Clippers. Curry is also averaging 4.6 rebounds and 2 steals per contest so far this season.
The 2014 NBA All-Star Game will be held on Sunday, Feb. 16 in New Orleans, Louisiana with TNT providing coverage of the event in addition to All-Star Saturday night festivities such as the Sprite Slam Dunk contest and Foot Locker Three-Point Contest. Reserves for the game will be announced on Thursday, Jan. 30 on TNT.
